Winter is fast approaching, temperatures are dropping and we are thinking about keeping our indoor space as comfortable as possible. Of course, not at all costs, because heating bills are soaring. The best known thermal bridge which cools heated rooms is the glass surface which is dated or which is inefficient with a low energy index, a real sieve. So, how do you insulate a window against the cold? We have five simple tips to show you that will save you money.

Tip 1: Redo the joints around the perimeter of the windows
Air seals are the first to check if a cool stream is coming in through your windows. In principle, the longevity of these seals does not exceed five years. If they are newer, they may be damaged. So, it’s time to redo them with a product designed specifically for this purpose. It is quite easy to install with a caulking gun. To shape the joints around the perimeter, you can use auxiliary objects like a wooden stick or professional tools. However, before sealing an exterior window, remember to remove all traces of the old sealant by cleaning the area around it. It must be clean and dry. You can do this easily with a multi-function tool that will make your life easier.

Tip 2: Apply polyurethane foam insulation around windows
Over time, window frames can become less airtight as insulation materials become less effective. It is possible to improve durability and optimize insulation thanks to the polyurethane foam that is applied around the edges. It helps fill small cracks that allow air to pass through. In aerosol form, application is child’s play. Choose foam with a higher R-value for better insulation. With a foam gun, you should have no problem spraying the right amount with great precision.

Tip 3: Install sealing strips at the bottom of windows
The installation of sealing strips at the bottom of each window will effectively complement the treatments to improve the general insulation of the thermal bridge of the openings. It’s an inexpensive solution that can also be applied to the bottom of doors. This does not prevent their opening and closing movement and the simplicity of application is accessible to everyone, even if you are not very good at DIY.

Tip 4: Apply a thermoplastic film to the glass surface
If condensation forms on the windows when it is cold, the problem may be due to poor insulation. This problem must be resolved quickly, as humidity can accelerate the expiration of your windows. Installing thermoplastic film on windows is an effective way to do this. In addition, its installation is very simple. Simply obtain the film in question and apply it to the entire surface of the window, securing with double-sided tape. The heat from the hairdryer will seal it permanently.

Tip 5: Dress the windows with thermal curtains
The thermal curtains solution works especially at night when you no longer need daylight. These are opaque curtains which insulate very effectively. For maximum insulation, choose them with a fleece or fleece lining. These materials block cold air and retain heat.
